Abstract

This paper proposes a method for evaluating the two-dimensional positioning error of a machine tool by the laser tracking measurement using a rotary axis of a machine tool. In the conventional laser tracking measurement, the laser tracker automatically regulates the laser beam direction to continuously measure the distance the retroreflector (target) attached to machine spindle. Such an “automated” laser tracker is complex and high cost. In the proposed scheme, a laser interferometer is attached to a rotary axis of a machine tool. The angle of rotary axis is regulated such that the laser beam is directed to the command position of target and measures the distance to it. Essentially the same laser tracking measurement can be done with only a laser interferometer required.
