Abstract

In the research, a new measuring instrument to measure the volumetric error of a machine tool based on the triateration principle is proposed. The instrument is a laser interferometer with the revolution mechanism to steer the laser direction. Unlike the conventional laser tracker where the laser direction is automatically controlled to track the target (a retroreflector attached to the machine spindle), it controls the laser direction to the target’s command position and measures the laser displacements between the instrument and the target. In this paper, the proposed instrument with one-axis revolution mechanism was developed and the uncertainty of the estimation of the volumetric error in two-dimensional space is evaluated experimentally and analytically.
