Abstract

Particularly in large-sized machine tools, it is important to evaluate angular errors of each axis because they are often the main contributor for volumetric errors. The objective of this research is to study a new method for the estimation of angular errors by using the laser step diagonal measurement. The laser step diagonal measurement is for quicker, low-cost evaluation of volumetric errors by using only a laser interferometer and a flat mirror. Numerical simulation, as well as an experimental case study, shows only two angular errors can be estimated by laser step diagonal measurements under the laser interferometer’s measurement uncertainly.
