Abstract

Static position and orientation errors of the axis average line of a rotary axis, collectively called geometric errors, represent the most fundamental error motions in five-axis kinematics. This paper proposes a scheme to calibrate geometric errors of rotary axes by on-the-machine measurement of artifacts by using a contact-type touch-trigger probe installed on the machine’s spindle. A touch probe is generally used for on-the-machine measurement of the accuracy of workpieces. This paper uses it to calibrate error motions of the machine tool by measuring an artifact of the known geometric accuracy.
